Marvel: Геркулес (Hercules)

Геркулес – основа греческой мифологии – впервые появился в Серебряном веке комиксов благодаря работе писателя Стэна Ли и художника Джека Кирби. Это также один из самых известных супергероев Marvel, ведь в его честь в 2008 году вышел целый сериал «Невероятный Геркулес» («The Incredible Hercules»).

То, что у Геркулеса неимоверная сила – всем хорошо известный факт. In terms of movie adaptation, Marvel and DC Comics have fairly close amount of movies and films, both cartoon and live-action. But since we live in current 21st century, let’s only consider movies and films of this era.

Generally, Marvel has a… more funny tone than DC Comics. Often the time, Marvel movies and films have more funny events, especially in recent movies like The Avengers or Guardian of the Galaxy. On the other hand, DC Comics brings out more serious theme throughout the movies. Typically we have the Dark Knight Trilogy directed by Christopher Nolan, especially The Dark Knight movie which puts Batman into an extreme mental battle with the Joker. In the recent movies like Batman vs Superman Dawn of Justice, we also see a serious topic between Batman and Superman.

4. Final Thought

At the moment, it seems Marvel is more popular than DC Comics. Some people may disagree, and they are true! Both Marvel and DC are close rivals in this entertainment industry. However, in general Marvel still seems to have more total audiences than DC Comics. That said; overall popularity doesn’t always mean better quality, especially in this case.

This is purely subjective opinion, yet there is a “hidden” reason for this slight difference in popularity. Basically it is relativity aspect. With Marvel, readers and viewers can easily relate themselves more to Marvel heroes. Meanwhile, DC Comics seems to be harder to relate. Why is that?

5 Marvel: Phoenix

The Phoenix Force is a child of the universe and was first introduced as a Jean Grey impersonator (Phoenix) X-Men #101 (1976).

According to legend, in the dying moments of the previous universe, the Force saved all existence from eternal damnation.  It was reborn from the cosmic fires of the Big Bang and become one with Freron, displaying itself as a giant fiery bird.

After having a portion of it essence ripped out by Necrom, the Force went into hiding and would later become one with Jean Grey. The Phoenix Force is a mutable manifestation of life, coming to be through the psyches of all living beings. It is immortal and completely indestructible.

For the Phoenix Force to manifest, it must possess a limitless source of energy provided by the life-force. It can project energy beams, fold time and space while causing black holes. Any powers the host has are brought to much higher levels.

3 Marvel: The Twins: Infinity/ Eternity

Infinity was created by Mark Gruenwald and Greg Capullo, appearing for the first time in Quasar #24 (1991). Eternity was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko and is first mentioned in Strange Tales #134 (1965) and then appearing in Strange Tales #138 (1965).

Infinity is a cosmic entity which functions within the entirety of space and its occupants. Together with Eternity, it encompasses all of creation, representing both time and space.

Infinity obtains its energy from all that exists in the spatial axis. Infinity utilizes an M-Body (manifestation body) when having to interact with physical beings.

When merged with Eternity, Infinity possesses the combined power of the space-time continuum. Since Eternity is the embodiment of time. Both came to be at the time of the Big Bang.

In Comics

Let’s recap: Marvel generally has a more realistic element than DC Comics. DC Comics focuses on godly beings like Superman, Wonder Woman, etc… All of these heroes are so… unreal in terms of power and origins. From our perspective, most of DC heroes are so out-of-this-world. They are like aliens (well… some of them ARE aliens) and therefore, somehow it felt really hard to relate ourselves to them.

On the other hand, Marvel deals with normal human with relatively normal life. Marvel heroes come from normal human just like us. Though their powers are abnormal, they still have human-like troubles. Like Tony Clark, he is a genius but he has serious mental breakdown issue. X-Men, a team of superhuman yet also viewed as “freaks” in real life (does this remind you of racism and discrimination?). Peter Parker, or Spider-Man, is an awesome superhero but he had to learn responsibility in extremely hard way (okay let’s be real… how many times we have to see Uncle Ben dies again?).

Their Locations

Real vs. Fake Cities

One of the easy differences between Marvel and DC is that while the former heroes reside in American cities we know like Boston, New York, Houston and Los Angeles, the latter heroes call home to fictional cities that could be anywhere.

Gotham City? Metropolis? Coast City? Central City? Star City? These are supposedly prominent places in America, but where they are is often kept vague.

The idea was that, like the Simpsons’ hometown of Springfield and its state capital of Capital City, they could be anywhere the reader imagines. Smallville could be the small town next to yours to add to that feeling this hero is local.

Marvel on the other hand, bases its heroes in real places, with prominence given to New York City. This gives an added grounding and readers can learn a lot about the places our heroes go. Marvel still takes liberties with local locations; there’s no real Baxter Building for instance, no New York paper called the Daily Bugle and Xavier’s Westchester estate is a bit nondescript.

Outside America

Outside America, the two companies play a similar card, that of the fictional small country. There’s no Latveria in Europe, neither is there a Genosha Island off the coast of South Africa, and Qurac sounds like an odd mashup of Qatar and Iraq.

This was mostly done to avoid backlash in poor portrayals or “destroying” a real foreign country. These days, going to a country where the heroes cause chaos on the silver screen is often done with the consent of the nation in question, usually because it gives that nation publicity to have a superhero visit there. But back when the comics were new, it was better to play safe and make somewhere up than have the heroes smash stuff in a poorly-known foreign country.

Which is good, we wouldn’t have had Wakanda otherwise.

The Theme of Realism

While both comic publishers present a make-believe universe, Marvel brings more realism to a fantasy world. In the words of Stan Lee, “I tried to merge the fantasy element with as much realism as I can put into the stories”.

Marvel characters have regular human problems that allow fans to “connect” with their stories.

Seeing troubled teens like Peter Parker or the cancer-stricken Wade Wilson suddenly endowed with superhuman powers offer a sense of realism and hopefulness. Tony Stark has an alcohol problem, while Peter Quill has daddy issues.

Marvel’s heroes are also from Earth and are granted special powers through science-gone-wrong (at least, most of the time), making their tales more plausible.

DC on the other hand, offers a mythical, far-fetched and fictitious universe.

Sure, there’s Batman, who deals with (somewhat) regular crimes in his city, but the majority of heroes, are either aliens, sea gods, or super geniuses – who let’s face it – aren’t really relatable to us and are more admirable in an otherworldly way.

4 DC: Guardians of the Universe

Commonly associated with Green Lantern, the Guardians of the Universe first appeared in Green Lantern vol. 2, #1 (1960). Created by John Broome and Gil Kane, they are a race of extraterrestrials who evolved on the planet Maltus. They currently act as the leaders of the Green Lantern Corps.

Unlike other superheroes, they don’t use super strength or abilities to fight their battles. They use brains. Officially the nerds of all things living, the Guardians of the Universe experiment with worlds and universes, always learning and adapting.

Their battles are called campaigns because they orchestrate rather than lead through brute force. In modern DC comic history, they were almost wiped out, with the only survivor being Ganthet. Their sacrifice created a power ring which is possibly more powerful than any ring they have created prior.

1 Marvel: One-Above-All

According to Marvel comic legend, One-Above-All is solely responsible for the existence of all life in the Multiverse. The One-Above-All is the master and cosmic overseer of the entity known as the Living Tribunal. The One-Above-All made its first appearance in Eternals #13 (1977).

“I am the One Above All. I see through many eyes. I build with many hands. They are themselves, but they are also me. I am all-powerful. My only weapon is love. The mystery intrigues me.”

Much like DC’s version of Elaine Belloc, the One-Above-All is omnipotent, omnipresent, and omniscient. It is above and beyond all powers and entities, even the Living Tribunal.

Marvel does additionally list One-Above-All’s powers to include cosmic energy control and armor able to withstand strikes from nuclear warheads.

Family Dynasties

DC

Perhaps to relate to the idea of “Greek legends”, DC is home to the superhero dynasties. Superman’s got Kal-El, his father Jor-El, his cousin Kara-Zor-El, a clone brother Kor-El and Kal-El’s half-human son Jonathan Samuel Kent. Not to mention the lineage of the far future.

You also have the Bat family; several kinds of Robins, one Batgirl and Bruce Wayne’s illegitimate son. Captain Marvel’s ‘cousins’ could count as a family as they make up a nuclear family of a mom, dad, brother and sister. Also the Speedsters, who are a dynasty all on their own.

Marvel

For Marvel however, you only really get this idea of lineages with Mutants, the Inhuman Royal Family and the Fantastic Four. But even most of these aren’t as homely or as representative as the DC super-families.

Magneto’s children, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch grew up separate from their father and the Pym family was more a series of partners and successors than an actual lineage. Hank didn’t even know he had a daughter with someone else until she turned up in his life.

The Summers could count in this lineup, although it’s very rare for the primary clan – Scott, Jean Grey, Cable and Hope – to all be in the same room together, so to a degree, they’re not entirely like a DC family.

18 DC: Captain Marvel

Not to be confused with Marvel’s Captain Marvel, Shazam was created by Artist C. C. Beck and writer Bill Parker and first appeared in Whiz Comics #2 (Fawcett Comics, 1940). DC bought the rights to Captain Marvel in 1973 and he was re-introduced with the publication of Shazam! #1.

This superhero is the alter ego of Billy Batson. Billy speaks the magic word

SHAZAM (an acronym of six immortal elders: Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury), transforming into a powerful god-like superhero.

Shazam’s powers include the usual superhero strengths and durability along with divine empowerment, transformation, electrokinesis, magic, flight, and even immortality while in his transformed state.

Shazam (Captain Marvel) can use power distribution too, allowing him to share his magical powers with anyone in his family that he so chooses. This creates similar and different powers within those individuals based on their personalities.

Marvel: Хеймдалль (Heimdall)

Elaine Belloc is the first being created by birth from an angel. Her biological father is Archangel Michael. She regularly fought in battle with Michael and Lucifer, which would result in Michael giving her his demiurgic power after being mortally wounded. Upon his death, the demiurgic power would essentially erase all of existence.

Elaine would go on to acquire more powers, allowing her to take charge of Lucifer and Yahweh’s creations.

Literarily stepping into existence as the God of Creation. Like any all-powerful all-being god, Elaine Belloc possesses the powers of omnipotence, omnipresence, and omniscience.

In simple terms, Elaine Belloc can’t become any more powerful or godly than she already is. No superhero or villain for that matter, would victorious in a one-on-one battle.

Marvel: Гроссмейстер (Grand Master)

8 MEPHISTO VS. NERON

Things would get boring if there was only one central demon character in comics, so instead of a single guy being the embodiment of the devil, there a dozens. Marvel and DC each have a chief demon who serves as a stand-in for Satan, and each are very powerful. Mephisto and Neron occupy their days by manipulating mortals, stealing souls, and telling great lies.

Both demons have shown the ability to imbue others with great power at a great cost. However, only Mephisto is seen able to alter reality itself, like he did in Spider-Man: One More Day. Heroes like Ralph Dibny and Midnighter have bested Neron far too often for him to stand against Mephisto, though he wouldn’t go down without some kind of a fight.

6 Smartest Scientist: Hank Pym vs Rami The Guardian

We were thinking about calling this one ‘scariest scientist,’ since both Hank Pym and Rami are loose canons. On the one hand, Hank Pym is alleged to be Earth’s Scientist Supreme. His creations include Pym Particles, the Ant-Man suit, and Ultron. We don’t think we need to emphasize how monumental each of those achievements is, as well as how bone-chilling that Ultron’s existence is.

In contrast, Rami is the Malthusian that engineered the Green Lantern Rings and the Phantom Ring. This guy somehow harnessed space magic and then put in a handheld device! Sure, Ultron’s a scary robot, but so is Amazo — an android that can replicate the powers of the entire Justice League! Using one of Rami’s rings, Hal Jordan to blast a hole through Amazo with one hit! Simply put, Green Lantern rings have far more scientific applications that anything Hank Pym’s created thus far. To that end, Rami takes this Marvel vs DC battle — especially if he were to use the Phantom Ring on Hank.

20 DC: Flash

The Flash was created by writer Gardner Fox and artist Harry Lampert. He first appeared in Flash Comics #1 (1940) and took on the nickname of Scarlet Speedster.

Over time there have been 4 individuals who have claimed the title of Flash: Jay Garrick (college athlete), Barry Allen (forensic scientist), Wally West (Barry’s nephew), and Bart Allen (Barry’s grandson).

“My name is Barry Allen, and I am the fastest man alive. To the outside world, I’m an ordinary forensic scientist, but secretly, with the help of my friends at S.T.A.R. Labs, I fight crime and find other meta-humans like me.”

The Flash (also known as the Fastest Man Alive) uses powers such as super speed, intangibility, and superhuman agility. Flash can also move at speeds which alter time, allowing him to travel backward or forwards through it.

DC: Призрак (Spectre)

13 Marvel: Hulk

Created by writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby, Robert Bruce Banner first appeared in the debut issue of The Incredible Hulk (1962). In terms of strength, the Hulk is truly a green beast. With a height of almost 8 feet tall and weighing in at close to 1,400 pounds, he is not a superhero one wants to fight in close quarters with.

The angrier the Hulk gets, the stronger he becomes. He can jump several hundred miles in one bound and can run at super speeds. Although, at some point, he begins to destroy the surrounding ground while running that fast which is why he prefers to jump.

The Hulk also has regeneration powers, along with an oxygenated perfluorocarbon emulsion. This allows him to breathe underwater and can move between varying depths without having to worry about decompression or nitrogen narcosis.

MMO

Вы удивитесь, но обе студии пытались выпустить свою игру в жанре MMO. У обеих получилось так себе. Сначала в 2011 году вышла DC Universe Online — классический MMO-экшн, который жив до сих пор. Конкуренты решили не отставать и в 2013 году выпустили Marvel Heroes. Этот проект был похож на MMO-клон Diablo и прекратил свое существование в 2017-м.

Сравнивать оценки игр очень сложно. У первой версии DC Universe Online для PS3 67 баллов, а у последней для PS4 — 75. У первой версии Marvel Heroes (ПК) всего 58 баллов, у последней с подзаголовком Omega 68 баллов на XBOX One и 83 балла на PS4. Кому верить? Отдам балл проекту, который выдержал проверку временем.

Introduced in 1934, DC was initially known as “National Allied Publications”. NAP later merged with “Detective Comics Inc”. and the affiliated “All-American Publications”, and was named “National Comics”. It wasn’t until 1977 when the comic giant officially changed its name to “DC Comics”.

Detective Comics was a series of detective stories inspired by the noir crime genre, while Marvel Comics were outlandish tales of fantasy or science fiction.

Marvel’s Origins

First published in 1939, “Marvel” was a series of stories by Timely Publications, first featuring The Human Torch, and one of the wholesale survivors for Marvel of that age, Captain America.

Marvel performed a radical restructuring of itself due to lagging sales, going from being “Timely Publications” to “Atlas Magazines”. In the 1960s, however, it finally gained its name as we know it today – “Marvel Comics”.

DC: Флэш (Flash)

9 Marvel: Silver Surfer

Created by Jack Kirby, the Silver Surfer first appeared in the Marvel comic book Fantastic Four #48 (1966). Born Norrin Radd on the planet Zenn-La, he’s known as one of the noblest and tormented entities in the universe.

“I am not a god. I have never created life, but I have lived. That is enough. So, I will fight to preserve that same opportunity — to love, to dream, to soar among the stars.”

The Silver Surfer wields the power cosmic, allowing him to absorb and manipulate the universe’s ambient cosmic energies. He’s almost totally indestructible and can navigate space, hyperspace and dimensional barriers.

The Silver Surfer can reach hyperspace speeds on his board and has even time traveled before. Like Hercules, his strength level is 100 plus.  He also converts matter into energy, meaning he never has to eat or drink for survival.
